𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿: Returning from international roaming, Airtel’s 5G "Fastlane" pushed a silent background profile update to my SIM. Axis Bank correctly detected this as a `SIM_STATE_CHANGED` alert and instantly deregistered my device to prevent fraud. (Security is paramount and the app did its job!).

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟱𝗚 𝗕𝘂𝗴: To re-register, the app sends a hidden verification SMS. Airtel successfully delivered the text to the bank, but dropped the delivery receipt on its way back. My phone logged a local "Failed" error, and the app instantly aborted the setup.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁: No app access meant no mobile OTPs, which locked me out of internet banking entirely. I was completely stranded.

𝟰. 𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 (𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀) 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹: After a useless call to Airtel customer care, I took it upon myself to solve this, as I was locked out of my account.

𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁: I sent SMS messages to friends. They successfully received them, but my Airtel SIM logged them as "unsent" (my secondary Jio SIM worked perfectly).

𝟲. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: I finally reverse-engineered the problem. The fix? Manually downgrading my phone to legacy 3G. Bypassing the 5G data layer forced the network to send a traditional SMS receipt, and the app finally registered. (The moment I switched back to 4G/5G, it failed again). Downgrading to a 3G network just to send an SMS is ridiculous, especially since banks like Axis don't allow registration over Wi-Fi, making 3G registrations a nightmare.

Rolling out a "premium" Fastlane 5G feature without testing how it handles critical legacy protocols like SMS receipts is highly irresponsible. I've escalated this to Airtel’s Nodal Officer. An average customer shouldn't have to troubleshoot a telecom routing bug just to access their own money.

While the bank isn't at fault, digital product teams should take note: if telecom networks unreliably drop acknowledgment packets, banks may need to evaluate server-side receipt checks instead of relying exclusively on easily broken local device logs.

It doesn't mean avoiding hard work, skipping difficult conversations, or choosing comfort over growth.

Flip the equation.

Happiness belongs at the beginning of the journey, grounding your decisions before you start.
